Voltage Optimisation for Huddersfield Manufacturer

Voltage Optimisation can reduce energy consumption for businesses and has the potential to deliver significant cost savings. It works by reducing the voltage of incoming power and the investment usually pays for itself within a short timeframe.

We worked with award-winning Huddersfield PVC-U window manufacturer John Fredericks to provide costings for 3 different voltage optimisation options. We then helped them plan, install and implement the technology.

Background

John Fredericks were keen to see a relatively quick return on their investment and wanted an installation that would support three incoming busbar chambers. We were mindful that they would need to futureproof the technology to meet future power requirements as the business grew. They also wanted to site the new technology outside their existing substation.

Our solution

We presented fully costed options so that the customer could make an informed decision. They chose a 369kVa system with remote monitoring that will pay for itself in 2.9 years.

The system casing was designed in John Fredericks’ brand colours and positioned next to the substation building on their site.

Benefits

Power is supplied at an average of 242v, whereas electrical equipment in the UK operates efficiently at 220v. The excess voltage means electrical equipment uses more power than it needs, reducing energy efficiency and often shortening the lifespan of the equipment.

A Voltage Optimisation unit sits between the incoming supply and distribution system to reduce downstream voltage. It’s a simple idea that can generate cost savings and improve sustainability.

The remote monitoring included with the system at John Fredericks means the customer can see in real time what savings are being generated. Their carbon footprint is reduced and the site is operating more efficiently, with less chance of excess capacity charges.

What the customer says

Philip Farnell of John Fredericks said: “We are always looking for ways to keep our costs as low as possible so that we don’t have to pass on higher costs to our customers and this technology means we can do that as well as reducing our impact on the environment. Core Facility Services did all the feasibility work for us which made it easy to see which solution would be the best one for our business, both now and in the future. They were very easy to deal with and have an excellent knowledge of the technology and how it can support businesses like ours.”
